Washington – In a sign of strong support for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through forest conservation, Germany has committed an additional EUR 30 million to the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development signed the agreement, which makes Germany the biggest donor to the Facility, with total commitments of EUR 84 million (approximately USD 110 million).

A multifaceted project to preserve one of the last of Ethiopia's native forests has been underway for the past four years with the support of Germany's International Climate Initiative and NABU, the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union. The project focuses on reforestation, job creation in the region and the introduction of sustainable forest management practices. The area was officially named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve earlier this year.

The German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) has provided 4 million euros to the Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) project in Laos.
